The main square is called Syntagma (Constitution) Square, is paved in marble and surrounded by historical buildings including a Turkish mosque, cafe, shops, a bank, and a hotel. The big square at the waterfront and the sidewalk that follows the harbor is a place where people watch the sunset, walk off their evening meals, or just enjoy the cool night breeze. It is very festive with vendors selling hot nuts, roast corn, and even cotton candy.
The Palamidi Fortress, which sits above and dominates the city, is actually three separate fortresses walled together. It was built by the Venetians in 1714 and then taken by the Turks the following year and held until they surrendered it to Kolokotronis after a 15-month siege during the War of Independence. There are 999 steps leading up to the fortress, but you can take a taxi for about three euros. The Palamidi is open from 8:30 am to 2:45 pm. This is one of the greatest attractions in Greece, right up there with the Acropolis, so don't miss it.
